Back in 2018 when we started working with a major UK home renovations retailer on innovating the kitchen buying experience, one thing became clear. Customers were deeply frustrated with the process of buying a kitchen. The same was true for the furniture-buying process. Buying a kitchen renovation or a new living room set should be exciting.
People spend upwards of 750 hours a year in their kitchens and more in their lounge spaces. The kitchen is the most complex and expensive room in a house to renovate, and most people will only renovate a kitchen once or twice in their lives. After conducting dozens of customer and employee interviews, it became clear. First, it was difficult for customers to visualise these purchases with seemingly endless options. They need smart tools for narrowing down their choices.
Also, while some people have evolved visual imaginations and can see in their minds what a new furniture set or kitchen will look like based on 2D pictures, most of us can’t. Even creative people need visualisation tools
